In his famous and controversial adaptation of Anthony Burgess’s novel, Stanley Kubrick creates a chilling portrait of a society saturated with violence and ideological control. The central character is Alex deLarge, the leader of a brutal gang of delinquents who drinks “moloko,” loves Beethoven, and indulges in ultraviolence. After his arrest, Alex becomes the subject of an experimental rehabilitation program designed to make him recoil from violence. Upon his release, he finds himself back in an equally cruel world, this time without the ability to defend himself. Kubrick crafts a disturbingly bizarre, sexually charged satire about power, manipulation, and the limits of human identity.
