When a fire at the Colectiv nightclub in Bucharest in 2015 claims the lives of dozens of young people, and more die in hospitals due to infections, journalists from the sports daily Gazeta Sporturilor launch an investigative inquiry. They gradually uncover serious failings not only in the club’s safety regulations, but also widespread corruption within the public healthcare system. A network of corrupt companies and systemic malpractice indirectly costs dozens more lives.
The documentary by Romanian director Alexander Nanau follows in parallel the remarkable work of the journalists, the mounting public pressure, the political upheaval in Romania at the time, and the intimate testimonies of the tragedy’s survivors. The film was nominated for an Academy Award and won the European Film Award for Best European Documentary.
