Filmmaker and visual artist Jan Švankmajer’s legendary status reaches far beyond the former Czechoslovakia. The film is an outstanding portrait of this original, world-wide known artist, and also documents the life and creative process of Athanor (named after a renaissance alchemical furnace) - Švankmajer’s film production company since the early 1990s. The numerous protagonists include producer Jaromír Kallista and pricelessly practical Tomáš Kalous. Although the film looks back on their productions, rather than a summary it’s more a lively situational film. This film’s young directors had the unique opportunity to join the Athanor “alchemy workshop” and take part in Insects, which Švankmajer refers to as his final film.
