Jan Rousek’s film essay examines the ways in which Africa was depicted and symbolically “conquered” through cinema. It draws on excerpts from correspondence between the head of the film group Jaroslav Novotný and the travel and filmmaking duo Miroslav Zikmund and Jiří Hanzelka, focusing on archival footage from the film Africa I – From Morocco to Kilimanjaro (1952).
