A raw story of sacrifice and unearthly love between a simple girl and a worker. The film was made a year after Lars von Trier and fellow directors had drawn up the Dogma 95 manifesto, which aimed to return to the simplicity of film with a focus on characters and story. Whilst falling foul of several of the manifesto’s rules (including number 10: the director must go uncredited) and therefore falling short of Dogma 95 criteria, von Trier nevertheless created a key 1990s film that won the Grand Prize of the Jury in Cannes.
