CINEMATIC RENAISSANCE
The Schockproof Film Festival in Bratislava: Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger
Director(s): Lloyd KaufmanUS108 min.2000

After a successful last year, The Schockproof Film Festival returns to Bratislava! The term toxic masculinity gets a whole new meaning once you meet the Toxic Avenger, the mop wielding mutated radioactive superhero from Tromaville and the face of the independent film studio Troma. Under the supervision of its founder and leading spirit Lloyd Kaufman, the company has been chucking out low-budget, low-brow entertainment since the 80s, building an impressive universe of its own, years before Marvel shamelessly ripped-off the concept. Always eager to horrify with all new depths of depravity, Troma reached a particularly obnoxious low point with Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, the final instalment in the studio’s flagship franchise. To give the screening a local odour, this proud cinematic turd will be dubbed into Czech live on stage by the stellar shockproof ensemble cast.

Der Himmel über Berlin
Director(s): Wim WendersDE127 min.1987

A metaphysical meditation on what it means to be human—on love, childhood, memory, and the divided city of Berlin in the days just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Two angels watch over the inhabitants of the metropolis from above, listening to their sorrows and joys. But what happens when one of them longs to experience the world as a human? Wenders dedicated his film about fallen angels to three great figures of world cinema (the "fallen angels" as they are referred to in the film) – Yasujirō Ozu, François Truffaut, and Andrei Tarkovsky.
